Progress! I’m loving the process of pacing the Progress!

I’m loving the process of pacing the work with the personality of the clay - all compliant when it’s fresh but so impressionable… 😜

then a while later, more robust but still able to be coaxed into collaboration with others…

then comes a point when it’s formed all its ideas about the world and it is done listening to me! No more bending to my influence, no matter how much I coax! 🤩

White raku is rapidly becoming a favourite 🥰

Wonderful help from Imbi Davidson @imbitween and all the crew at NRCG.

It’s always a bit of a mixture of excitement and holding my breath to make sure nothing goes wrong. It was a great start that everything arrived in one piece, and the unpacking was very straightforward. Looking forward to the opening event next Thursday. There will be some celebrations. If you’re local it would be great to see you there.

You’ll be treated to works by three other artists - @susan_davidson_2482 @caitlin_reilly_ and @kerry.elias_moore
This video is an animation of my artwork ‘After This video is an animation of my artwork ‘After the Fire Front’ from my exhibition – Ash, Mud & Tears.

The making of the work has been a journey into the experience of the fires and floods that affected the lives of our community in the #northernrivers. One of the core ideas that emerge for me from a personal perspective and also from the environmental planner and conservationist in me is the concept of fragmentation — how these events shattered people’s lives and the landscape.

This piece called ‘After the Fire Front’ was made of multiple panels painted with many layers of cold wax and oils then stacked and cut with a jigsaw and the pieces reassembled to create the final artwork. It’s comprised of 39 individual segments of painted plywood.

I finally finished covering the sketchbooks with m I finally finished covering the sketchbooks with my ink skins ready to be delivered with the artwork for our Ash Mud & Tears exhibition next Monday. It’s a big exhale, one of many, maybe on the journey to getting a body of artwork together for an exhibition. I know this is a bonus side dish of merchandise for the gallery gift shop, but it’s been worth the effort because the sketch books are truly beautiful and I’m quite reluctant to part with any of them because they are so unique. Each ink skin that I make is different — even when I’m trying to replicate a design or a colour palette. I find it almost impossible and there’s a great beauty in that. There is a lot that I leave to chance.

Yesterday was Earth Day. It’s great (& funny) Yesterday was Earth Day.

It’s great (& funny) how everyone makes a special effort to post some meaningful image on the socials.

I saw them in my feed this morning and knowing they were from my North American friends realised I probably ‘missed’ it by 24 hours…

Then I thought to myself, like many people I know, every day is Earth Day…

from planting a garden full of natives to encourage the honeyeaters and lorikeets…

to composting my kitchen scraps…

to adding big solar on our roof so we can power an electric vehicle and get away from fossil fuels…

to volunteering for the local natural history association…

to creating a career focused on highlighting the significance of nature and the importance of caring for this planet…

by being a park ranger…
then an environmental planner…
and now an artist whose work is all about the crisis we are facing because of the destruction of our natural environments, my fears in the face of a changing climate and loss of wild places and their beautiful wildlife.

Every day is Earth Day.

Who else feels odd about relegating this important issue to a single day of their year?
