Playing with Obvara firing and raku firing today l Playing with Obvara firing and raku firing today lead by the talented @jacquisos Jacqui Sosnowski with @jennjohnstonceramics at Jacqui’s studio in Mullum… was so much fun. Here’s some snippets from our morning’s ceramics adventure.
Art making in a post referendum world… Yesterd Art making in a post referendum world…

Yesterday I found out that a dear friend of a dear friend of mine won a big art prize - like 100k big - it was a stunning piece and I found myself wondering what impact the success of that would have.

On a very modest scale, I’ve had a recent flurry of positive feedback - an award here and work being selected as a finalist there - and what I’m noticing is that rather than interrupting my flow, it has just propelled me… more ideas, more making, more passion for themes that I want my work to capture.

But on the back of the referendum, I am questioning is what I’m doing - making art about the importance of nature through a focus on our connections to places and landscapes - is it enough. That’s my own measurement of success.

Big question, no single answer right now.

Any other Australian based artists having a similar rethink?
I am delighted to have ‘First & Last Generation’ selected as a finalist in the @byron_arts_magazine 2023 Art Prize. I created this work after reading a quote by Barack Obama - “we are the first generation to feel the effects of climate change and the last generation with the chance to do something about it.”

It’s constructed from timber salvaged after the 2022 floods and old iron nails, gifted to me by my father, the carpenter.
I know it’s rare these days to see my face. I wa I know it’s rare these days to see my face. I want to share with you my joy at being a part of the Ingenuity Sculpture Festival 2023.

This is me with my work titled ‘Holding it Together (Trio)’. Thank you @yolandadecuevas for snapping me 🤩

I’m pleased to say, the work won an Award, and I’m grateful to the organisers @creative_mullumbimby and Christina Khumari @ckhumari for their ongoing support of other artists.

If you are in Northern Rivers, drop in to see a wonderful array of work by talented artists like @jesspoulsensculpture @jacquisos @gondwanacolour.

It’s on in Mullumbimby at the Mullum Museum til 15 October.
Tonight was the Opening of #ingenuitysculpturefest Tonight was the Opening of #ingenuitysculpturefestival at Mullumbimby.

After feeling excited to have my work selected, I then debated whether to install inside @mullumbimbymuseum or outside in the grounds.

Finally after toing and froing… and several discussions with @ellen.ferrier and a site visit it was decided that I would install outside.

But what to display it on?

I wanted to get these small works up to the height of a mantle piece where the viewers could have a close eye level view… any lower and the concept and works would be lost. It was a gamble as I feared their delicate nature could be swamped by their surroundings but in the end, the stand made from timbers salvaged from the side of the road were perfect. They had age and existing character and fitted in.

Tonight, on Opening I discovered that I won the ‘Live Long & Prosper’ Award sponsored by @ckhumari Christina Khumari. Nothing could be more fitting ☺️🔆 Thank you Christina.

Thank you too to @ellen.ferrier and @studiosuvira for making it all happen. Love your generosity of spirit (and your maddock!)
A long awaited visit to Radiance: Art by Elisabeth A long awaited visit to Radiance: Art by Elisabeth Cummings on at the @nas_au.

What a magnificent exhibition - the artist’s passion for colour and array of marks, her layering of paint and scraping back to reveal under layers was a delight to get close to. The textures - so striking in real life. So grateful to have had the chance to visit.
Spending a couple of days volunteering for #laming Spending a couple of days volunteering for #lamingtonnaturalhistoryasociation at the visitor information centre at #binnaburra

Took a few minutes before the first walkers arrived at the centre this morning to enjoy the colours and textures of some of the open forest and views from the #cavescircuitwalk

It’s good to be back, soaking up #naturesbeauty
New work being finished in the studio. More smal New work being finished in the studio.

More small sculptures - another “after the mud dried” house and a new arrangement, titled “first and last generation”, after the quote by Barack Obama, who said this generation is the 1st to feel the effects of climate change and the last to have a chance to do anything about it.
Finished a new addition to the ‘Holding it Toget Finished a new addition to the ‘Holding it Together’ series… the middle work follows the theme of the previous small sculptures with the use of salvaged timber, handmade iron nails (a gift from my late father) and patina copper. These materials leaking out… the title refers to the phrase I heard from so many friends and colleagues who said they were ‘barely holding it together’… I’ve been exploring the hidden and obscured and the withheld experiences that many in the community, having been through the floods, hold back from sharing. So much upheaval to carry. Such incredible resilience on so many fronts.
